JACKSON COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENT UNION RENOVATION, JACKSON, MI
Designed and Constructed 2015
What we did
Jackson Community College decided to adaptively re-use an existing geodesic dome structure that had previously been home to a NASA exhibit. The new use provides a gathering place for the student body. As a gathering place where the students’ imaginations might soar, the administration endeavored to put on display a real-life example of the school mascot, a jet airplane, suspended as though in flight. Besides the design of structural components for the renovated spaces within the dome, LSC worked closely with the college’s team of fabricators in the Aviation Department to quickly devise a method of elegantly displaying the evocative mascot. Renovations of the space were already underway when the decision to display the aircraft was made, adding a short schedule to the list of challenges associated with supporting a one and a half ton airplane some 20 feet above the floor from a monopole structure.
